When letting a person, place or ideal dictate my reactions and identity, I am commiting idolatry. Only I can decide what and who I am and that comes from the dictates of God. Whenever I let others decide such important things I not only deprive myself the right to be who I was created to be, but I deprive God the ability to tell me who I am. I am not God, they are not God. I simply cannot let others tell me who I am or I influence me, that's above their pay grade.
